GROWING UP IN MAKUTA, BOTSWANA
I was born in Botswana and spent my childhood in a small village in the Central District called Makuta. Life in Makuta was simple but beautiful. However, one of the biggest challenges we faced was access to clean water. We relied on wells and boreholes for drinking water, but these sources were far from pure. Pathogens in the unclean water often led to serious health issues for many in the community, including my own family.
Back then, waterborne diseases weren’t just a statistic—they were a harsh reality. Although Makuta now has access to tap water, and the lives of its residents have improved dramatically, my childhood experiences stayed with me. They were a constant reminder of how essential clean water is to health and well-being.
A GLOBAL PROBLEM
While I’m now based in the UK, where access to clean water is often taken for granted, many people worldwide still live with the same challenges I faced as a child. According to the World Health Organization, millions of people lack access to safe drinking water, and waterborne diseases remain one of the leading causes of death globally.
During my travels and interactions with others, I’ve come across travelers, especially to Ghana and parts of West Africa, who shared a startling reality: they have to ship bottled water to their countries of travel because they don’t trust local water sources. FROM INSPIRATION TO ACTION
For years, I swept my desire to help solve the clean water crisis under the rug, focusing on other aspects of life. But these conversations, coupled with the memories of my childhood, brought the issue back to the forefront. I realized that I couldn’t ignore the problem any longer. I needed to contribute to the solution.
That’s how I found myself in the drawing room, designing and producing products that can help tackle the unclean water crisis. These include innovative water filtration and purification bottles—compact, portable, and life-saving solutions for travelers, backpackers, and communities with limited access to clean water. Today, I proudly sell LifeStraw/WenaMane, and LARQ bottles, each offering unique features to ensure safe hydration. At the same time, my team and I are busy working on developing WenaMane Water Filtration and Purification systems.
