✺ Frequently asked questions ✺

    • The Go Series utilizes a two-stage filtration system consisting of a microfilter membrane and an activated carbon filter.

      • The membrane microfilter lasts up to 1,000 gallons (4,000 L) and will stop allowing water to flow through once it’s reached the end of its lifetime. Replacements can be found HERE.

      • The activated carbon filter lasts up to 26 gallons (100 L) of water with proper use and maintenance. We recommend replacing this when you notice a change in smell or taste of your water or every 60 or so days with regular use.

  • Go Series replacement filters are available at LifeStraw.com and through many of our authorized dealers both online and at physical stores.

HERE is a link to the membrane replacement which includes a carbon.

HERE is a link to the carbon capsules sold separately in packs of 2 and six.

To find a retailer near you, we recommend visiting our Store Locator tool.

If visiting an authorized dealer, please call the store or visit their website for inventory availability.

Please note: When buying a replacement membrane microfilter, ensure you are getting the correct replacement for your version of the Go Series bottle. Lids with the flip up straw will need a press-fit filter. Lids with a twist-on mouthpiece and lid require a screw-in filter.

  • For a full list of contaminants removed by the LifeStraw Go Series water filter, please view our Performance Data Sheet | List of Contaminants Removed

  • We recommended washing your LifeStraw Go Series bottle by hand but if needed, the Go Series bottles can be placed in the dishwasher for cleaning, but only after the filters are removed and you should avoid the heated dry setting. It is recommended to remove the cover and mouthpiece from the main cap and wash them separately.

Please see our video guide for proper procedures on safely and effectively washing your bottle.

Cleaning Your LifeStraw Go Series Water Filter Bottle

  • LifeStraw Membrane Microfilters are made of hollow fiber membrane technology. These membranes contain microscopic pores of 0.2 microns in diameter.  When dirty water enters the filter, the microscopic pores block bacteria, parasites, microplastics, dirt and other forms of turbidity which are larger than the pore size.  Clean water is then able to pass through the membrane for drinking.

LifeStraw Membrane Microfilters are capable of removing 99.999999% (log 8) of bacteria (including E. coli and Salmonella), 99.999% (log 5) of parasites (Giardia and Cryptosporidium) and 99.999% (log 5) of microplastics.

  • LifeStraw activated carbon + ion exchange filters reduce lead and other heavy metals and chemicals such as PFAS, glyphosate, and chlorine while enhancing water taste. The activated carbon has been treated with specific processes to open millions of tiny pores between carbon atoms. LifeStraw uses a unique advanced formulation made of fiber instead of granulated carbon, which improves longevity and performance. The filtration process works via absorption - contaminants get trapped within the pore structure of carbon and adhere to surfaces.

The ion exchange component contains a resin with cations that are bound to the fibers and are not harmful. When liquids containing other solvent ions pass through the fibers, the dissolved ions in the water (such as lead and other heavy metals) are exchanged for the non-harmful ions in the fibers. As a result, harmful elements are trapped, and non-harmful ions are released, making the water safer to drink.

These activated carbon and ion exchange formulations are carefully designed to remove specific chemicals and heavy metals that are dangerous to human health while allowing other healthy nutrients (such as sodium, calcium, and magnesium) to pass through. The LifeStraw Ion Exchange + Activated Carbon Filter also has a unique formulation that maximizes the contact surface with the ion exchange and carbon fibers, thus enabling highly advanced performance in removing chemicals and heavy metals, as shown in the results efficacy tests against more than 30 contaminants.
